Dr. Janesh Pillay

Dr. Janesh Pillay, is an intensivist and Assistant Professor at the Department of Critical Care at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG). He obtained his PhD from the University of Utrecht in 2011 studying neutrophil biology in acute inflammation, elucidating human neutrophil heterogeneity. His current reseach focusses on organ recovery, in particular the lung, in critical illness.  Using a translational approach with a combination state of the art techniques such advanced molecular imaging, ScRNAseq and unique biomarkers of tissue remodeling, his aim is to understand the mechanisms of pulmonary recovery. The interplay between inflammation and tissue remodeling is studied using techniques readily translatable to clinical practice such as point-of-care neutrophil flow-cytometry, soluble biomarkers and PET/CT imaging.

He has received several personal grants such as a Longfonds Young Investigator Grant, ECISM NEXT and ZonMw Clinical Fellowship, and several project grants from ZonMW for Long-COVID and from a partnership between Siemens and the UMCG (PUSH) to study the value of molecular imaging using PET/CT in the ICU.
